Guide to successful rodent control on farms.

Step1

The first step when undertaking a rodent control problem on a farm should be to have a good tidy up. Reduce the number of places rodents have been sheltering and make the area as unwelcoming to your rodent friends as possible. Clear away piles of rubbish, old pallets and machinery. When the area has been cleared cut back any overgrown vegetation.

Step2

The next step you should take is to deny the rat access to your buildings. Whenever possible keep doors closed and seal gaps underneath, repair any obvious entry points for example gaps around pipework should be filled in with cement. Expandable filler may be the easiest option but won't last long against a persistent rodent who will chew through it.

Step 3

Clear up any grain spillages immediately, animal feed will be the rats food of choice so unless we can prevent them from eating this we will have little chance of tempting them to eat our rodenticide baits.

Step 4

It it a good idea at this point in our control program to start monitoring rodent activity this will enable you to plan an effective baiting program. A good idea would be to draw some plans of the farm and note where you notice rodent activity. Not only look for sightings of live rats but look for footprints in damp soil, burrows and signs of damage such as gnawing marks on doors and holes chewed through sacks. Droppings that are less than a few days old will be softer and darker than old droppings this is a good sign that rats have been visiting the area recently.

If your not sure of what to do next you might want to give us a call, our prices for Farm contracts are lower than you might think. We can provide a comprehensive service to control rodents and avian pests.

Guide to successful rodent control in poultry units.

Rodents pests can be a real headache for Yorkshire poultry keepers. Sooner or later rats and mice will cause you a problem. Not only will they consume food intended for your birds. Rats can be dangerous to human health, rats are known carriers of many diseases. Poultry units are an ideal home for rats food and shelter are what the rat is looking for this is all provided by the poultry unit.

Pest control in poultry units should be at the top of your agenda. Make poultry housing is as rodent proof as possible seal up small gaps as even the smallest gap may provide easy entry for a rat. Raising the unit off the ground will help prevent access, 12 inches should be sufficient. Make sure all food is kept in sealed rodent proof containers, make sure that you keep your compost heap away from the unit as this will also provide food and shelter for rats.

If you choose to deal with the rats yourself there are a few simple precautions you should take. The first is always read and follow the instructions to the letter. Some baits are for indoor use only this is because they are very toxic.

Trapping is a usually a safer option but again you must make sure the rat trap in placed where only the rats can gain access to it. There is a lot of legislation you need to be aware of when controlling rodent pests claiming ignorance will not stand up in court should something go wrong.
