Rodent pest control

The Brown rat "Rattus Norvegicus" also known as the Norway, house, or sewer rat is brown in colour and measures between 33 to 43 cm from nose to tail. It has small, close-set ears, a blunt muzzle, and sharp teeth.

Worldwide, rats are the most destructive pests known to man. Rats are a known source of several diseases afflicting humans including Leptospirosis and Salmonella. Rats will contaminate food and cause extensive damage to buildings by gnawing through wood and enlarge masonry openings to gain entrance. Damage is also cause in the construction of the nest. Fires can occur as a result of the rat chewing through insulation on electrical wires.
Rats are a serious hazard to public health. Aside from contaminating food with their droppings and urine, fleas from rats were responsible for spreading the bubonic plague. Infections from bites can be serious and sometimes fatal.

Rats are year-round pests. Most indoor infestations occur during the winter when the rat seeks warmth and shelter. Under certain conditions, rats can survive outdoors during the winter period.
Rats are most active during the evening and remain so until the middle of the night. If food and water are in short supply or if the infestation is particularly large then rats may become active during daylight hours.

The average life span of a rat is 18 months. Young are born about 22 days after mating and mature rapidly. Single females may produce up-to 6 litters per year, averaging 6 to 14 young each. By 3 months of age, the young are independent and capable of reproduction.

Rat droppings near available food sources are the most common indication of an Infestation. Evidence of gnawing, rub marks, burrows, nests, and damage to stored products are indications of the extent of an infestation.

Tracks aresometimes seen in soft ground, powdery substances. Rats and mice have four toes on the front foot and five on the hind. The toes of the front foot (manus) are evenly spaced, but on the rear (pes) the central three are usually bunched and may be almost parallel, as shown below.
