Ant pest control

There are two main species of Ants found in the United Kingdom, the Garden Ant and the Pharaoh's Ant.

The garden ant is black in colour and has a segmented body; workers are 5mm in length and the queen 15mm long.
The garden ant is found mostly in gardens in the UK their nests are usually found in soil and lawns close to buildings. They sometimes cause a nuisance by entering kitchens in the search for sweet foods. Garden ants do not carry germs or spread disease but are mainly a nuisance due to their foraging habits.

Garden ants will swarm in mid to late summer when the males mate with the females on the wing. The male ant then dies; the female will then hibernate before starting a new colony the following year.

The control of garden ants is best achieved by destroying the nest, using approved insecticide dust or spray. Steps can be taken to prevent access to buildings. By using a residual insecticide to create a barrier Take all precautions during the season to ensure that sugary are in sealed containers and spillages cleared up.

The Pharaoh's Ant is of tropical origins and is smaller in size the workers being only 2mm long and the queen only 5mm long, both are dark yellow in colour.

They tend to live mainly in large heated buildings such as flats and hospitals Pharaoh’s ants are protein feeding and will often feed on unpleasant substances such as decomposing food and blood. The Pharaoh's Ant can carry harmful germs picked up when feeding. They are very difficult to eradicate. The nest contains several colonies, which will have several queens. Unsuccessful treatment of a nest can cause one or more of the colonies to move to a new location.

Pesticides used in the control/treatment of Pharaoh’s ants very are selective and usually containing a growth regulator to prevent the ants developing and reproducing.
